- '97 Girls

The 97 girls finished their first full season in Lake Highlands Classic League in 3rd place in Division II with a total of 31 points!  They finished ahead of TFC Blue, also having 31 points, by virtue of a 2 win and no loss head-to-head record against TFC.

This is the most successful result any ETSSC team has ever had in their initial U11 season at LHGCL.  The only other ETSSC team to reach Lake Highlands in their U11 year accumulated a total of 16 points over 18 games.  Points are accumulated at 3 for a win, 1 for a tie, and 0 for a loss.  Congratulations to Coach Orr and the 97 girls for an excellent first year in Classic League soccer.

Coach - Shannon Orr

Manager - Lori Winchester  lori_winchester@hotmail.com

E T Spirit 97 Girls welcome Coach Shannon Orr as the new head coach effective May 25, 2007. Coach Orr has previously coached with the Dallas Texans and the Albuquerque Football Club in New Mexico.

Shannon's coaching philosophy can be summed up by an excerpt from an email he had sent to be distributed to the parents of the 97 girls:

As far as my methods of coaching are concerned, players at this age should be developed with following priorities in order of importance:

1         Psychological – enjoyment and love of the game

2         Technical – a solid foundation of skills to play the game

3         Tactical – decision making on how to play the game

4         Physical – the fitness required to play the game

My training style is very disciplined in terms of addressing these aspects of the game.  I have high expectations for my teams and players, but I do my best keep in mind that these are children, not professionals. It is my philosophy that if you develop teams and players properly, success will come naturally.  Kenny and Stefani are correct, relying on one player and restricting positions is not developmental for the team or the individual player.  As far as game management is concerned, I always give a substituted player a very specific reason as to why the substitution was made.

I want to stress the importance of not coaching the players from the sidelines while the players are playing.  This includes coaches, managers, and parents.  The real instruction comes from training, and the game belongs to the players.  It is their time to show all of us what they can do, what they’ve learned, and where they’re going.  Please only offer positive comments of encouragement.  For example, “way to go”, “good job”, “you are doing great”, and “you can do it”.  Anything that affects their decision making on when to do something, what to do, where to go, and how to do it is considered coaching.  Please save your daughter and yourself the embarrassment of having her coming off the field due to this type of sideline instruction
